Pacific salmon are one of the most iconic species in British Columbia. Each year, millions of salmon return from the ocean to spawn in the rivers where they were born.
The five main species found in BC are Chinook, Coho, Sockeye, Pink, and Chum salmon. Each species has unique migration patterns, timing, and habitats.
Chinook salmon, the largest of the group, are prized by anglers for their size and strength. Coho are known for their aggressive strikes and aerial fights. Sockeye runs can be enormous, while Pink salmon often provide high-action fishing during peak years.
Understanding when each species runs—and where—can dramatically improve an angler’s chances of success.
